Learning to be Tech – Savvy

With all the gizmos and gadgets coming out continuously, it’s hard to keep on top of what the latest technologies are and how to use them to your advantage.

Learning technology can be overwhelming, but with the help of your family, resources online, and perhaps some tech classes, you too can become a tech wiz!

Here are some of the ways that seniors can take advantage of the current technology out there.

Making Life Easier
Smartphones, tablets, and ipads are great tools which can be used to make life easier in numerous ways. Many people prefer tablets and ipads to traditional computers because they are light, simple, and user friendly.  For those who buy ipads, Apple provides free classes to teach users the basics and how to get the most out of their ipads.

With a smartphone , life can become much easier by providing you instant access to internet while you are out and about. For instance, map technology in smartphones can help you find your way around whether you are walking, taking transit, or driving.

Managing Your Health
Many Apps (short for ‘application’, a program on smartphones, ipads, and tablets) can help you live a healthier lifestyle.

Examples include applications which can set reminders for you to take medications, monitor your blood sugars if you are diabetic, help you make decisions about healthy eating by providing instant nutritional information, help meet fitness targets by suggesting exercises, or provide you with an entertaining Sudoku to keep your mind active.

Keeping in Touch
Social Media outlets, which can be used on computers, smartphones, and tablets alike—can be a great way to stay in touch with family and friends.

Facebook is one of the most popular of social media outlets. On Facebook,   you can share photos, information, and private messages with other users.

Skype is also a great tool to stay in touch with family. Skype allows one to video-conference for free. Instead of a costly phone call, you can actually see and speak with a loved one who may be situated across the world.

With the vast amount of new tech available, the process can be overwhelming. Take it one step at a time, check out what resources are available are in your community, and invite family and friends to help you with your new tech toys.
